"Planos y fondos" means "Planes and Backgrounds." This piece emerged from the idea of layering musical elements. The concept was to work with musical materials that were subordinate to a certain plane. These planes could be, for example, the "speed plane," where elements appear either slower or faster. The recognizability and functionality of the materials are also attributed to these "planes," where the musical gestures are categorized either in the foreground or background.

After an initially more motivic section, a melodic development appears in the English horn—the harmonic atmosphere then intensifies and reaches a climax. This is followed by a section characterized by complex counterpoint, in which—through its rhythmic design and accompaniment—a kind of tango emerges.
