Martín Rincón Botero studied composition in Lübeck with Dieter Mack at the Musikhochschule Lübeck and in Bogotá with Diego Vega and others at the Universidad Javeriana. His conducting teachers were Arturo Tamayo in Lugano (Switzerland, Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana) and Frank Hube in Lübeck (Germany, Musikhochschule Lübeck). As part of a project sponsored by the Fundación Batuta, he received composition lessons with Don Freund. He attended composition masterclasses with Sidney Corbett, Samuel Adler, Sandeep Bhagwati, Rodney Sharman, Arnulf Herrmann, Reiko Fueting, and Hèctor Parra, and conducting masterclasses with Martin Sieghart, Ricardo Averbach, and Nikolay Lalov.
In 2015, he won the Théodore Gouvy Composition Prize, which included a composition commission for the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Saarbrücken. His music has been performed at various events in Germany, Austria, Colombia, Spain, Poland, and the Netherlands, such as the Klangspuren IEMA (Graz), Mouvements (Saarbrücken), Unerhörte Musik (Berlin), and Zeitgenossen (Heidenheim). Ensembles and orchestras that have performed his works include the German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken, Trompo (Amsterdam), Boreas Quartett Bremen, Ensemble Volans (Hamburg), Gdańskie Trio Stroikowe (Gdańsk), and the Symphony Orchestra of the Musikhochschule Lübeck. He was also a finalist in the Witold Szalonek International Composers' Competition (2018) and the World Percussion Group Competition (2018), and received an honorable mention at the national composition competition for string quartet in Colombia, FestiQ-Artetos (2018).
His strong interest in harmony and musical significance led him to briefly work as a lecturer for work analysis (Introduction to Pitch-class Set Theory) at the Musikhochschule Lübeck. He also served as a regular speaker at the symposia of the International Anders Eliasson Society in Vienna and Stockholm, where he contributes to the analysis of works by Anders Eliasson.
He has conducted a range of ensembles and orchestras, including the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra (Hungary), the Orquestra de Câmara de Cascais e Oeiras (Portugal), the LandesJugendEnsemble für Neue Musik Schleswig-Holstein (Lübeck), Ensemble 900 (Lugano), the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Charlottenburg, Spandauer Blasorchester (Berlin), Wind & Brass Ensemble and Concert Band (Hamburg), and ensembles for contemporary music at the University of Music Lübeck.
He was a semi-finalist in the conducting competition of the International Conducting Academy and Competition of the Orquestra de Câmara de Cascais e Oeiras (Portugal) in 2023. He recently participated in the second phase of the Orchestra's Conductor International Competition with the Radio Chamber Orchestra of Romania.
